Many of the biggest hits, fashion wise, were trends that had started in 2008 but there are a few noteworthy ones that are still at the top of their game and will see continued popularity in 2010. Let’s look back at some of the best of 2009.

Boyfriend Jeans

Probably the biggest hit of the year, the boyfriend jean. The trend got its start in 2008 but really picked up speed in 2009 and Katie Holmes led the way. But let’s not get confused here, there is NO WAY her rolled up jeans are Tom Cruise’s, he’s just too short to share pants with this leggy actress.

Draped Dresses

Draped dresses are gaining in popularity and will probably hit their stride in 2010 but this fashion trend can be a girl’s best friend, hiding the rough spots and emphasizing the best ones. Before buying a draped dress make sure it fits your form in the most flattering way.

This year leather in all forms was very popular and this trend will no doubt continue. Part of the rise in popularity of leather is its durable, practical and stylish, which is great during the down economy and is also the reason it will continue into 2010.

Statement Jewelry

Probably another fashion trend that is influenced by the economy, statement jewelry was all the rage. Don’t worry about precious gems, expensive metals or real pearls, load on the most or the biggest of these costume jewelry replicas and you’re on the cutting edge of trendy.

Basically, the economy had more to do with the undercurrent of fashion in 2009 than appeared on the surface. The trendiest pieces are inexpensive and the more expensive pieces are designed to last for a long time.
