Nautical looks have been around for a long time, coming and going on the runways like the tides. So it’s no surprise that they’re back again and with just a little tweak here and there they’re updated for the 2010 season.

As usual, the nautical look is defined by the use of red, white and navy blue, sometimes touches of light blue, grey and black and prints that include stars, stripes, and anchors. The cuts are pretty much preppy but there are ruffles and enough unexpected skin to make the looks more modern and up to date.

Today’s nautical clothing and accessories are not as girly as they have been in the past and do not bring to mind images of cute children in  pinafores, but are more grown up and classic in their lines. This makes turning a pair of jeans and a simple white t-shirt into a nautical look a snap by adding a couple accessories that are reminiscent  of the beach or the sea.

Word of advice here, this season’s nautical trend is not overly strong or overly nautical so go easy on the purchases, pick a couple pieces you either love or are versatile and can be worn in different ways. When a trend isn’t heavy handed at the outset it typically doesn’t last too long.
