Rules for Great Looking Maternity Style

By |   May - 29 - 2009

When you’re pregnant looking good isn’t the main priority, your health and your baby’s health should top the list. But there are times when looking great is important and there is no reason that a pregnant woman shouldn’t look as good as an anorexic swimwear model. Isabella Oliver, maternity designer for the stars (and regular folk too) has come up with a list of Maternity No No’s, style mistakes that completely ruin a look and take baby bump beauty into drab and dumpy in a heartbeat.

Kelly Rutherford

The first rule is don’t delay. Select pieces that not only cover you throughout the pregnancy but for a few months after (don’t kid yourself, that body is not going to instantly return). Then mix and match the pieces. Gossip Girl actress Kelly Rutherford is doing a great job of shoving a healthy salad into her mouth, but she’s also selected a great mustard yellow wrap that works in a great mix and match way and can be worn pregnant or not. A wrap cardigan or the Isabella Oliver Wrap Cardi is a perfect piece to carry you through the pregnancy and nursing.

Jamie Lynn Spears

Another rule is to be clever with color. Unfortunately, young Jamie Lynn Spears is just a little too clever with color here, as she looks like a piñata about to explode. She would have looked so much cuter in this Ruffle Wrap Dress in plum with some contrasting shoes and accessories. Just a bit of color, Jamie, not every color.

Halle Berry

Another thing to keep in mind is buy clothing that is not trimester specific, well built maternity clothing will last through the entire pregnancy, growing as you do. Take for example this dress Halle Berry is wearing, the petite actress looks pretty far along in her pregnancy here but the dress could grow with her for what appears to be another 18 months. Rather than going to that extreme, try something with a little ruching like this Ruched Tank Dress which has the extra material built right in for style when you’re in the early months and room when you’re nearing the end.

Tori Spelling

And Isabella Oliver says to stick with your sense of style, so I guess if you were tacky before you’ll probably continue to look tacky, i.e. Tori Spelling’s overexposed pregnant body. If you’re a little more modest, try a Twist Tankini to hide that stretched-to-its-limit belly of yours.

There are more rules to buying and wearing maternity clothing and if you follow them you’re bound to look your best throughout the entire pregnancy and not waste money on clothing you’ll only wear a couple times at most.
